Trade tools: Michael Sotelo from Alma DDB
Trade tools are a functionality to highlight the many tools that help make advertising and marketing succeed. The tools can be everything that helps people play in their superior form, from a favorite writing table to the best software to a lucky pen, a vintage typewriter or a pair of headphones.
The next step is Michael SoteloPlease, digital creation and experience strategy at Almaddb.
What is a tool you use all the time at work and how does it inspire your work?
While analyzes and market studies are excellent (which does not like a good graphic to sectors?), The deepest ideas sometimes come from sources that still leave their socks in the living room. Enter my 14 -year -old daughter, Sofia, and my 11 year old son, Franco – my internal trend analysts and the future consumers we all try to impress.
The conversations with Sofia and Franco are … enlightening. They are brutally honest – Sofia asked me once why I had a Facebook and Franco account keeps reminding me that “no one uses an email, dad”. Their frank comments on brands and advertisements are like having access to the most unreported discussion group in the world. They question my hypotheses and push me to go outside the traditional advertising box. They taught me that social responsibility is not only a fashionable word; It is a non-negotiation. The marks must take a stand, otherwise they will meet alone.
For what Are they Your favorite?
In the constantly evolving circus of advertising, following social media trends wants to try to go beyond a cheetah on a monocycle – which has to say the least. I love having my children as an almost constant “tool”, so I always take notes and I receive their opinions when I want.
Sofia, my resident expert of generation Z and the only person I know who can use “yeet” in a sentence correctly, offers a seat in the world of adolescents always mystifying. His daily escapades on Tiktok and Snap (note how I cleverly dodged by mentioning all the meta platforms) reveal a universe where authenticity is not only appreciated, asked.
She is not just scrolling; She creates content, participates in viral challenges and has somehow convinced her parents to dance to the camera. By observing it (totally not spied on – parental supervision, right?), I learned that flashy advertisements and celebrity cameos are almost as attractive as dad’s jokes are, well, she. It is narration, relatability and this real connection which makes you forget that you are marketed.
Then, there is Franco, my 11 -year -old child who believes that if he does not play, he waste time. His playgrounds are COD (do not judge me), Roblox and Fortnite-platforms which are as foreign to me as the Internet Dial-up for him. These are not only games; These are social hubs where he and his friends drag, attend virtual concerts and, on occasion, ask me for money to buy a new “skin” (which I learned, is not as scary as it may seem).
Through Franco’s eyes, I see the future of immersive advertising. Brands cannot simply slap their logos on a banner and call it one day. They must be woven in the fabric of these digital experiences – as once I discovered that he had attended a virtual concert of Travis Scott in Fortnite. Breathtaking things.
How did you acquire your tool or hear about it for the first time?
The first was acquired in 2010 and the other in 2013. The first time I noticed that I could benefit from their insight was after being presented to the Trendtok application by my daughter. It was one of my favorite discoveries to follow and provide trendy songs and sounds. Trendtok gives you the opportunity to see what is trendy on Tiktok and provides you with analyzes that can provide for a growing trend or a decline. It specifically shows you all sounds and songs that tend to a specific category such as beauty, games or cooking.
How does that help you succeed?
Taking advantage of the ideas of my own children is not only to stay fashionable. It is a question of filling the gap between generations. It is a reminder that the most precious tools in our profession are not always digital dashboards or KPIs, but human connections that add depth to our work.
By kissing their points of view, we manufacture stories that are not only current but also culturally and socially relevant. In addition, it gives me a chance to fight to understand their slang, so I do not embarrass myself during the next family gathering.
Does it have a sentimental value?
Nothing has greater sentimental value than the tool of human insight from humans that I helped to create.
Do you think your tool could become viral tiktok?
Absolutely, I think my “tool” could become viral tiktok, and here is why: in the world of digital trends, people are looking for authenticity and new perspectives, and what is more authentic than the ideas of a young person 14 years old and 11 years old? My internal “trend analysts” constantly teach me the nuances of generation Z and beyond – not deposited, honest and often hilarious.
