In this article, I’ll explore common challenges people of color might encounter when getting started in tech and offer my tips for overcoming them, based on my personal experience doing the same.

1. Fight imposter syndrome

Imposter syndrome is a pervasive problem that affects many professionals, and it can be especially prevalent among people who change colors in tech. This feeling of self-doubt and uncertainty about one’s abilities can be paralyzing, often leading individuals to question their place in the industry.

I remember very well the day I completed my Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) program. Although the certification gave me a solid understanding of the product lifecycle and decision-making processes, I still felt an underlying doubt in my abilities.

It wasn’t until I started applying my skills in real-world scenarios that my confidence started to grow. The key was recognizing my accomplishments and reminding myself that I belonged in the tech space.

My pro tip: Combat imposter syndrome by celebrating small victories and seeking mentorship from those who have successfully traveled similar paths. Surround yourself with a supportive community that reinforces your value and potential.

2. Upskilling through certifications and boot camps

The technology industry is dynamic and constantly evolving, which makes continuing education essential. For career changers, building skills through certifications and boot camps can provide the knowledge and credentials needed to make a successful transition.

When I decided to pursue technology, I realized the importance of intentionality. I identified specific roles within companies that interested me and focused on mastering the language and skills relevant to those positions.

This focused approach helped me understand the industry better and made me more confident during interviews.

4. Choose a growth-oriented career path

It’s tempting to take the easy route when transitioning to a new career. However, choosing a path that offers long-term growth and aligns with your interests and strengths is essential for lasting success.

During my career transition, identifying a specific discipline within the technology industry and dedicating my efforts to becoming proficient in that area proved invaluable. This intentional focus increased my chances of obtaining opportunities and ensured I was on a path that provided continued learning and growth.

Look for informational interviews with professionals in these positions to gain insight into their experiences and career trajectories. Make informed decisions based on your interests, strengths and long-term goals.
