Another local Pittsburgh journalist decides to retire

WTAE journalist Bob Mayo said he would retire on December 31.

“I am grateful for my years at WTAE, a station I have watched since I was a child growing up in Carrick. I remember staying up to watch what was then called ‘4 Star News,’” Mayo wrote. on social networks.

“It’s like jumping off a moving train: You have to decide at some point to do it,” Mayo told TribLive.

He began his career as a teenager, volunteering on the WQED show The Place. He was a radio reporter/coordinator for WWSW-AM/FM before joining WTAE-AM. He started working at WTAE TV in 1994.

Mayo also reflected on moving away from beat reporting on local television.

“While I was on general assignment, I was always the person who most often ended up covering government and political stories,” Mayo said. “We had specialists, like medical editor Marilyn Brooks. We don’t have that now. I hope that other journalists, not just here on television but in general, will have the opportunity to hone these particular areas of expertise and skills. I think viewers are well served and the reporting experience is better.
