Judge won’t reduce bail for man accused of assaulting Colorado Springs reporter
The judge in charge of the case against Patrick Éganthe man accused of a racially charged attack on a Colorado Springs journalist, said Egan poses “a significant risk to the safety of the community.”
She refused to reduce Egan’s bail and expressed concerns about Egan’s willingness and ability to appear in court.
Egan is accused of assaulting a KKCO/KJCT reporter Ja’Ronn Alex on December 18.
He allegedly followed Alex in his car before asking him at a red light: “Are you really an American citizen?” This is Trump’s America today. I’m a Marine and I took an oath to protect this country from people like you. He then tackled and choked Alex outside the KKCO building, according to the affidavit.
“The allegations in this case are very concerning,” said Deputy District Court Attorney. Victoria Fazzino said. “People have concerns about victim safety (and) community safety. The fact that he is a sailor, we understand that may be a mitigating factor in some respects, but in other respects it was part of this offense where he said he was a sailor and he had to protect the country.
“It makes people worried about the safety of the community,” Fazzino said. “People believe bail is appropriate when it is set based on the allegations in this case and his history.”
“He has suffered from mental health issues for about two decades now,” the public defender said. Ruth Swift. “…Mr. Wilson has seen Egan go through ups and downs. He told me that he was usually able to intervene before things got to a point where there was some danger to the community or to Mr. Egan.
Egan is due back in court on January 16.
