His discreet departure contrasts sharply with his arrival in July 2014 at CNN. Camerota was transferred from Fox News by former CNN boss Jeff Zucker and became a permanent addition to the revamped morning show New Day, with which she co-hosted Chris Cuomo And Michaela Pereira.
Camerota remained in this position from January 2015 until April 2021, when she moved to co-anchor the CNN newsroom with Victor Blackwell weekday afternoons. His departure from the New Day it was more festivewith farewell messages from Dr. Sanjay GuptaCNN national security reporter Josh Campbelland her husband Tim Lewis, who died earlier this year.
In September 2022, then-CNN CEO Chris Licht moved her from afternoon to prime time as anchor of CNN Tonight at 10 p.m. This interim mission became permanent the following January, and it remained in the time slot until August 2023, when it was replaced by Abby Phillip.
Camerota then moved to a reporting role for CNN’s long-form unit, focusing on The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper. His on-air appearances became limited following this decision; Camerota was notably absent from much of CNN’s coverage of the 2024 presidential election cycle.
One reason for her minimal appearances was her husband’s battle with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. “I plan to write more in the next few days and return to work in the next few weeks,” Camerota wrote in an Instagram post announcing Lewis’ death. Her return saw her take on a role as a stand-in presenter which she held until her departure was announced.
TVNewser contacted CNN and Camerota about his on-air role at the network near the end of his tenure, but received no response at the time of publication.
Current CEO Marc Thompson is making significant changes to the network, including reduce talent salaries And predict imminent layoffs. Camerota may have considered herself an odd one out as the network navigates its current transition mode.
“Alisyn is a rare talent, capable of interviewing world leaders and everyday heroes with power and empathy.” Thompson wrote in a statement following the announcement of his departure. “She has been a wonderful colleague at CNN for over a decade, and we will encourage her in her new endeavors where she is sure to be very successful.”
“New horizons are great when you are ready for them”, Camerota declared after his last broadcast on CNNpromising an announcement soon on its next steps.
His exit from CNN may have been quiet, but it seems Camerota isn’t done making noise.
